The Silicon Valley was filled with ‘first principles’ companies and the ideas of engineers and designers. However, all the possibilities derived from ‘first principles’ that I evaluated felt like they did not live up to what is possible on a broader scale and what humanity needs for its future existence. Expressing zero-based discovery is challenging with the words and concepts available to us today, but I understand the emotional profile of finding zero. In the professional analysis of one of AlphaGo’s matches against the world’s best human Go player, an observer noted that the moves were like watching an artificial intelligence game play “jumping from an alternate dimension.” That’s the profile. That’s what you feel when witnessing a zero-based discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since hearing that, I have continued to return to the idea of an “alternate dimension.” For the trained eye, AlphaGo seemed to manipulate new ideas or strategies that were either entirely new or old enough for contemporary professionals to abandon. Artificial intelligence didn’t take our human assumptions for granted and played with the primitives of new conceptual structures inside the game, ones even experts couldn’t see. The moves were already there. A human could have played them if they knew. They were always possible. But something about the human mind made us never see it, even after repeating the culture and strategy of Go for thousands of years. And why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AlphaGo discovered zeros in the game of Go, but Go is a finite and fully informational game. My primary interest: How can we find the best moves – those ‘coming from an alternate dimension’ – for the future of intelligent existence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No previous generation has been afforded the opportunities we now have: to look into the span of our expected lives and see the true potential for evolving into entirely new forms of conscious experience. The existence that transforms to the point where our current selves, and today’s realities, will seem primitive and uninteresting historically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What could these be? Zeros defy definition and are challenging to envision. Some thoughts come to mind: What if we were not driven by social status or the approval of others or the accumulation of wealth? What if we felt no tribal inclinations? What if our primary concern was harmonious play, of a kind for which we don’t even have words or concepts today, with everything around us? (What do you think of [insert your unconventional, unexpected, and unforeseen confirmations] that I cannot see?) After all, our modern world would seem all these things, and equally strange, to our ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could have been easy to dismiss these musings, even just a few decades ago, as impractical or a waste of time for anyone wanting to accomplish something. (As we build our independent selves, our mental energies will be liberated to explore these frontiers.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The search for zeros is relevant to everything at the forefront of our minds now, from how we deal with climate change, adapt to technological disruption, build artificial intelligence, govern ourselves, evolve and motivate our reasons for continuing, and continuing that. Exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have recently intensified these thoughts and begun practicing ‘zero-based thinking,’ aimed at uncovering new transformative intellectual elements. It is a twin to ‘first principles thinking.’ Zero-based thinking revolves around the foundational building blocks or structure of all things, while first principles thinking revolves around the laws of the system or how things interact. First principles thinking sets goals in known terms and seeks to achieve them, inventing and learning new things as needed, but rarely revealing entirely new conceptual primitives of the kind the world needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people say, ‘From first principles…’ to start their argument, what they mean is that they want to assume the least number of things from within a certain framework. Innovation in space exploration is a good example of the good that can come from first principles thinking alone. Our space agenda today is valuable and challenging, and we don’t have all the answers about what’s in the universe, but we have a good sense of the questions and the fundamental elements. A few new fundamental elements for space travel have been discovered long ago, and we are still working to define the effects and laws for the same basic concepts from the seventies, which can be said to go back to Newton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherlock Holmes is a classic first principles thinker, succeeding as a detective with his trademark precision logic: ‘When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’ In this, Holmes can – confined to a book – assume a closed universe of things, where if X and Y are the only two things that exist, then X is not Y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in the gentle conclusions of Dirk Gently, the ‘holistic detective’ invented by Douglas Adams in contrast to Sherlock Holmes, has a different approach: ‘I don’t like eliminating the impossible.’ This is zero-based thinking. Seeing through the blind spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In investigating a murder, Holmes did not think of the possibility, or even hypothesis, that time travel could play a role. Dirk Gently, however, does not rule it out. Partly because how does he know what is possible and what is impossible so far? He illustrates an imaginative revelation style indicating a fundamental difference in logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zero Order Technology<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future of human existence cannot be inferred from first principles alone. We need zero explorers. If we cannot formulate a complete model of where we are heading or what we can aspire to, it is challenging to create actionable plans with clear objectives that stimulate widespread collaboration. I believe this is a feature, not a flaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our shared evolutionary future with artificial intelligence will provide a record number of building blocks similar to zero, which, in turn, will elevate our aspirations. When brain interfaces enable the real-time coupling of individual minds with artificial intelligence, we may witness the emergence of zeros akin to the Cambrian explosion. Our subconscious mind, for our thinking, serves as deep learning does for artificial intelligence, which, when harnessed, will be capable of generating ideas that seem to come “from another dimension.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By definition, you cannot “reach zero” or introduce a new element into thinking directly, so you must try to push the boundaries of first principles thinking to the maximum, leaving no marginal gains. How can humans, as architects of intelligent systems, increase the speed of zero-based discoveries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, some additional examples from technology and science:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Karpathy’s vision of Software 2.0 is zero-level software engineering that uses a “barely human-friendly language” to achieve a goal through a deep neural network (DNN). This is in contrast to Program 1.0 where a human writes clear code instructions to achieve a specific goal. Perhaps Karpathy’s model could be termed as Software 0.0?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel Dennett’s concept “Joosting” (jumping outside the system) aims to discover zeros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Einstein discovered zero when he assumed that the speed of light might be constant for all observers, revealing new conceptual primitives. Quite literally “jumping from another dimension.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or consider the historical example of European engineering before and after the introduction of zero (the number\/concept). Everything Europeans thought they understood about mathematics had to be reconstructed from scratch to include the concept of zero once introduced. This doesn’t mean the elements of Euclid from the Greek era suddenly became old or worthless. The power of zero lies in allowing the reconstruction of current mathematics for a more powerful understanding of geometry, which includes the concept of zero. This led to Cartesian geometry – including the origin of the coordinate system at (0, 0) – and suddenly, geometry and algebra could be conceptually linked through the decimal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Europeans knew zero, Descartes could not arrive at Cartesian geometry. All anyone ever tried to do was better and better Euclidean engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need more of these ideas. In a world where we constantly work to expand the scope of our understanding, every zero-based principle can open up a range of broader fields. And this is more than just an Asi impact, the kind popularized by Ray Kurzweil, “To the right”\/hockey stick\/curved pattern things. Zeros change the rules of the game.
